Update on the Westboro Baptist Church visit

  • Feb. 24th, 2009 at 5:43 PM

http://www.buffalonews.com/258/story/586891.html

I didn't get to go to the counter-protest (car trouble - our tires were about to pop off (literally) and it was kind of wintery out that day which would have meant disaster).  Anyway, I'm really proud of the locals around here and I wanted to share the article with you all.

Who said Buffalo sucks?

Great.  The Westboro Baptist Church is protesting memorial services for victims of the 3407 plane crash.  My friend is giving me details for a counterprotest (one where we'll just be silent and stand in front of the hate-mongers so that the grieving families don't need to see them).

Never thought I'd see these losers in town.

Online

  • Jan. 28th, 2009 at 5:59 PM

Hey everyone,

I won't be online a lot for a bit. This has NOTHING to do with the "online drama" going on (I don't just disappear because someone decides they want to disown me after knowing me for years), and more to do with the fact that we just got slammed at work and between doing almost 12 hour days and trying to train our new bassist (Girl Power!) songs before the battle. Oh, and somehow I have to work on those books. I won't be GONE, I am just drastically reducing my already short online time.

So....Marie - I will be reading your updates when I come around to it :)

Atheists, geeks, scientists, and club music lovers...well communities are always full of activity so playing catch up won't be hard.

Anyway message me on myspace if you need to, because I have to keep track of band stuff on myspace anyway.

Sibs - you have my number.

Doesn't make scents...

  • Dec. 21st, 2008 at 11:11 AM

I went downstairs to do laundry this morning, and all I could smell was perfume. Thinking someone else may have left their scent-laden clothes in the washer, I lifted the lid and discovered that the washer was empty. Except for the blue soap left over, probably from someone on auto-pilot that made a mistake.

Only I couldn't rinse out their mistake, because the washer is a pay washer, and paper towels and water did nothing. So I had to waste a dollar on an empty load (we don't have a lot of quarters left), just to make sure that I didn't wash my clothes in asthma-inducing toxins.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but I sort of think that this ignorant neighbor of mine owes me a dollar in quarters.

So the lesson is: if you are using anything scented (artificially or naturally), please be aware that you might send someone to the hospital. Even if it's "just a little."

Anyone who knows me knows that I would not say "Fuck You" to California for not voting for McCain. You don't even have to know me well.

So why, when I posted a bulletin much like my prior blog (but more succinct - it simply said, "Fuck You California, Fuck You") - would anyone assume that?

My husband used to be in a band with this character - so it's not like we never spoke before. In fact, I introduced my husband to him, not the other way around. We (this person) used to work together.

And why the fuck would I care about Obama raising taxes? I don't mind taxes - as long as they pay for the things that they really should pay for - things I agree with.

And why why why why why why why would a women of my intellect ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever vote for someone who believes women do not deserve rights or proper healthcare...or you know...anything revolving around civil liberties and science?

I guess I am not really upset about this person's world view (narrow as it may be) as much as the fact that they should know me enough to not make that assumption.

Fable II

  • Oct. 21st, 2008 at 10:34 PM

...Yeah. I'm going to hibernate in my living room and be a nerd for a while. If I don't pick up the phone or answer any messages/email, just know that in my heart, Fable II really is better than you.

I'll get over it, eventually.

Handlebars

  • Sep. 28th, 2008 at 12:10 PM

Okay.

There is this girl at work who was talking about "the stupid handlebars song" a while back. This story was in conjunction with one about how her brother made fun of her hair being in pigtails, saying that pigtails were only good as handlebars. So, of course, I thought that "the stupid handlebars" song was some sort of sexist song about blowjobs.

Then I heard "Rise" by Flobots. I came across them after wondering if there was such a thing as punk/hip-hop. So my husband and I went out to buy their CD.

"The stupid handlebars song" was on the CD. It's more appropriate title is "Handlebars."

That song is not sexist. It is not stupid. It's probably one of the most intelligent songs I have heard in a very long time.

So I went up to this girl, and asked her if this song was the same song. She said that it was, and continued to call it stupid (she had it on her iPhone though, unless she had it there for her brother). I had to explain to her that even though she didn't like it, it didn't make it stupid. In fact, you have to be somewhat aware of what's going on around you to understand it. I'm thinking her brother may have tainted the song for her. Maybe she couldn't get by the "cherry stick" lyric.

Anyway, this girl is younger than me (still living at home). We're work friends. I don't hold "the stupid handlebars" song against her. The song was just in my head when I woke up this morning, and this story was brought to mind.

UFOs and CERN

Likely?

Let's for a moment assume that there are beings visiting us, and have been for quite some time.  Why, if the sightings have not been in Geneva where the collider is, would people assume that said sightings are caused by the project?

And assuming that we are not being visited - why still?  If I say that I saw a few lights in the sky during the next presidential inauguration, does that make what I see more paranormal?  The coincidence suddenly makes it evidence?

I do not understand.  Does anyone else?

By the way, can anyone find valid and trustworthy scientists that oppose the operation of the LHC?  Because in EVERYTHING I have read (that's not to say that I've read every piece of info out there) has only stated "opposition from scientists," without names.  I also recall reading that one of the major proponents of the "death by LHC black-hole vacuum" theory was a science-fiction writer, not a scientist.  Does anyone have a list of these supposed scientists?  Perhaps with some of their credentials and other background information on them?  Or is this just the needless paranoia that travels alongside scientific advancements?

What the fuck?

Aug. 21st, 2008

  • 9:21 PM

Today my husband and I were walking through the store as it was pay-day, and we like to frequent the DVD/CD section.  We often find that this store (not Wal-Mart) has a nice little section of new, cheap CDs from bands that aren't super huge yet and quite possibly only on their first or second album.  Sometimes, if we like the album and song titles, we like to grab a CD we've never heard of just to get a new experience.  Sometimes we will hear some indie song somewhere and find that CD too, and do the same thing just to give the band a chance.

Lately this hasn't been so much fun.  Mostly because we pick up the CD and think, "Boy I really hope this isn't a Christian band."

That drives me crazy.

We have no problem with a band believing in a god, but we have a problem with a band labeling themselves as a religious band, because then we know that they have an agenda.  We've accidentally bought CDs of Christian bands without knowing.  When we pop the CD into the player in our car, we almost stop ourselves from looking at the "thanks" section if we like what we hear.  It has put a damper on our musical pastime (because we prefer not to support agendas that we do not agree with).

We joked about how our band (when we release a CD) will probably need an explicit lyrics warning on it, but religious bands don't need any sort of warning labels (since they aren't all in the "Gospel" section).

Anyway, this was just a thought I had about how the religious have ruined a very small yet enjoyable hobby of mine.
